"OMNIBUS" History of this name. In France in 1823 a fellow named Stanislas Baudry, in a suburb of Nantes began running vehicles to a stand in the Place du Commerce. This stand was at a shop belonging to another man...named M. Omnes, who adopted the slogan Omnes omnibus. "Omnes for all!" |

| The word "Omnibus" means "providing for many things at once," and was already in use in the French language. | |||||||

His surname is very close to this
word "omnibus" already being used. He made a play on words with
his surname and a word describing multi-tasking. So, really "Omnibus" back then meant "multi-tasking". So Mr. Omnes recognised this and started a catch phrase... but his name didn't stick... just "Omnibus", an existing word now had a "noun" meaning. Soon people dropped the "omni" and just referred to the vehicle as "bus". |
